On Thursday 21 December 2023, Luxembourg's Ministry of Health and Social Security provided a weekly update which provides a summary of the evolution of acute respiratory infections, including COVID-19, influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Trends of the week

- COVID-19: increase in the number of COVID-19 cases.
- Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV): slight increase in the number of RSV cases.
- Flu: sharp increase in the number of flu cases.

COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2

For week 50 (from 11 to 17 December 2023) the number of people positive for SARS-CoV-2 increased to 790 cases compared to 658 cases the previous week, an increase of 20%. The positivity rate increased to 30% compared to 28% the previous week. The viral concentration detected in wastewater is increasing. The latest available sequencing data shows a preponderance of the BA.2.86 variant (44%) followed by the XBB.1.9 variant (30%).

Flu

For week 50 (from 11 to 17 December 2023) the number of cases of influenza reported by laboratories increased to 245 cases compared to 138 cases the previous week, an increase of 77%. These data largely overlap with LNS sentinel surveillance which indicates increased circulation of SARS-CoV-2, RSV, influenza virus and rhinovirus.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)

For week 50 (from 11 to 17 December 2023) the number of people positive for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) reported by laboratories increases to 152 cases compared to 134 cases the previous week, an increase of 13%.
