COVID-19 Vaccinations Start in Homes for the Elderly

Luxembourg's Ministry of State, together with the Ministry of Family, Integration and the Greater Region and the Ministry of Health, have confirmed that the first COVID-19 vaccinations of staff in residential structures for the elderly and in aid and care networks, have commenced in the Grand Duchy.

After the launch of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccination campaign on Monday 28 December at the Hall Victor Hugo in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg, for hospital staff and ambulance workers, it was then the turn for the assistance and care staff of the accommodation structures for elderly people and support and care networks. 

Claudia Holzwarth, head of the care and supervision service (dementia unit) of the “Bei der Sauer” care home in Diekirch, and Sonja Kohnen, care assistant in the animation service of the Sanatorium in Vianden, were the first people to be vaccinated on 29 December at the Hall Victor Hugo vaccination centre in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg.

As a result, a total of 1,200 people will have been vaccinated against the coronavirus during this first phase of the vaccine allocation plan carried out between 28 and 30 December in Luxembourg. The second dose will be administered to them from 18 January, also in the Hall Victor Hugo vaccination centre.

The ministries have confirmed that that both residents and cross-border workers will be covered in this first phase by the vaccine allocation plan.

In the first allocation phase of the BioNTech / Pfizer vaccine, a total of 9,700 vaccines have been delivered to Luxembourg, which will enable around 4,850 people to be vaccinated in a first phase.
