Luxembourg will increase the allowances and financial assistance for doctors in the process of specialisation.

On the proposal of Minister of Health Étienne Schneider, the Cabinet meeting held on Friday 29 March 2019 saw the adoption of increased compensation and financial assistance for doctors on the road to specialisation.

As Minister Étienne Schneider pointed out: "This increased amount is a positive incentive needed to make the doctor's profession more attractive. We want to promote the level of education and responsibility of young doctors in the process of specialisation, and also contribute to a positive evolution of medical demography in the Grand Duchy."

Specifically, doctors in the process of specific training in general medicine will receive a monthly allowance of €3,300, which corresponds to an increase of €1,200. Meanwhile, the financial assistance for doctors in the process of specialisation in one of the specialties in medicine and dentistry recognised in Luxembourg, will increase from €2,100 to €2,700 per month.

These amounts will apply during a transitional phase from the summer of 2019. Indeed, new benefits will be paid from the academic year 2020/2021, with the introduction of new medical specialties offered at the University of Luxembourg. in the disciplines of medical oncology, neurology and general medicine. "This new offer of studies is designed to attract foreign students who wish to continue their studies in Luxembourg to eventually start their professional career," said Étienne Schneider.
