On Friday 21 August 2026, Luxembourg's Nature and Forest Administration issued a reminder to the public concerning increased risks during periods of drought and heat.
Regarding the overall condition of forests, weakened by prolonged periods of drought and heat, despite current weather conditions, certain inherent environmental risks persist.
Even seemingly healthy trees can conceal risks that are not visible from the outside. Besides the possibility of breakage and falling branches, entire trees may be destabilised.
The Nature and Forest Administration has recently learned of another incident in which a person was injured by a branch that suddenly broke off from a tree in the municipality of Berdorf.
To reduce risks, forest users are urged to be vigilant and follow these recommendations:
- Remain alert during walks and activities in the forest, especially during prolonged periods of drought;
- Avoid visiting forests during and after storms, high winds, or heavy rain;
- Choose open areas away from trees when taking breaks during walks;
- Stay on marked trails;
- Strictly adhere to temporary closures and safety measures;
- Avoid any activity that could cause sparks or fires.
