On Wednesday 5 August 2026, Luxembourg's Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Service (CGDIS) reported that fifteen firefighters had returned to the Grand Duchy after several days supporting French emergency services in the Gironde region, which has been severely affected by wildfires.
Upon their return to Luxembourg, the firefighters were welcomed by Luxembourg's Minister for Home Affairs, Léon Gloden, and CGDIS duty director Alain Di Genova. According to the CGDIS, the firefighters had been deployed as part of a Grand Est firefighting unit. Each day, they were assigned an area covering several hectares, where they took part in monitoring and securing operations after the fires had passed.
Their mission included preventing fires from reigniting, dealing with smoke emissions and remaining hotspots, and carrying out reconnaissance patrols, particularly in the evening, to reduce the risk of overnight flare-ups.
The CGDIS noted that the mission was carried out in close cooperation with the French emergency services and once again demonstrated the importance of cross-border cooperation and solidarity between rescue services.
Minister Gloden said: "I would like to express my deep gratitude to the fifteen CGDIS firefighters returning from their mission in Gironde, to the crews of Aquarius Aerial Firefighting, and to all firefighters in Luxembourg whose commitment contributed to the firefighting efforts. Their professionalism, dedication and sense of duty demonstrate the solidarity between our countries in responding to emergency situations. Luxembourg is proud to provide support whenever our partners need it."
