VdL Offers Free Removal of Asian Hornet Nests

On Tuesday 22 September 2026, the City of Luxembourg (VdL) announced that it is offering free removal of Asian hornet nests across its territory, including on private property where the nests are easily accessible.

According to the VdL, the Asian hornet has been spreading across Europe since 2004. As a predator of honey bees and other pollinating insects, it poses a threat to the balance of ecosystems and local biodiversity.

To curb the spread of this invasive species, the VdL has set up a specialised unit within its Safety Department to remove Asian hornet nests. The unit works in public spaces and on private property. On private property, the City covers the removal of nests in easily accessible areas, regardless of their size. The service is free of charge for those concerned.

The VdL asks residents to report Asian hornet nests within the City of Luxembourg by email at vespavelutina@vdl.lu, by telephone on 4796 3839, or via the Report-it system or cityapp – VDL. Email reports must include the nest’s exact location and a photograph showing the nest and the hornet to avoid possible confusion.

The City urged residents “to remain vigilant and not to attempt to remove an Asian hornet nest themselves, to avoid any risk to their safety.”
