To keep up with demand, Luxembourg will require an additional 243,000 to 324,000 housing units by 2060, according to Statec.
According to these latest projections, the potential housing demand in Luxembourg could vary from 5,600 to 7,500 homes per year depending on the scenario (GDP growth, demographic changes, etc). Whilst in 2018 there were 253,000 private households in the Grand Duchy, Statec's methodology suggests that there could be between 462,000 (0% GDP scenario) and 539,000 (4.5% GDP scenario) households between 2030 and 2060.
The potential reasons for these numbers are a decrease in the number of people per household (from 2.35 to 2.08), an increased number of single-parent families and single people living alone or a higher death rate among older couples and thus more widows/widowers living alone. Considering such factors, the potential housing demand could vary from 243,000 additional households (0% GDP growth scenario) to 324,000 (4.5% GDP growth). This represents a need for an additional 5,600 to 7,500 housing units per year.
