According to the ADEM employment agency, unemployment in Luxembourg has fallen 9.9% over one year; as of 30 April 2021, the unemployment rate stood at 6.1%.

At the end of April 2021, the number of available resident jobseekers registered with the ADEM was 18,249, i.e. 440 fewer people than in the previous month. Compared to the previous year, this represents an decrease of 2,004 people or 9.9%. In April 2020, the labour market was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, with an annual increase of 31.1% of job seekers. The current decline can therefore be seen as a backlash. After a sudden rise in unemployment in March and April 2020, when the rate reached 6.9%, it began to gradually decline to reach its current level.

That being said, long-term unemployment is on the rise. The number of jobseekers registered with the ADEM for more than twelve months was up 8.9% compared to April 2020 and the number of jobseekers who have been inactive (i.e. neither in employment nor receiving unemployment benefits nor on sick or maternity leave) for more than twelve months was up 19.9% year on year. The situation of jobseekers under the age of 30 has improved, despite being particularly affected by the economic impact of the pandemic in spring 2020, the number of young jobseekers is now decreasing faster than the average (down 17.2%).

In April 2021, 2,043 residents registered with the ADEM, an inecrease of 247 people or 13.8% compared to April 2020. The particularly low number of registrations in April last year was mainly due to the mass use of short-time working.

The number of resident jobseekers receiving full unemployment benefits fell by 148 or 1.5% over one year to reach 9,581. The number of beneficiaries of unemployment measures stood at 4,518, which is well above the level observed in April 2020 (an increase of 778 people or 20.8%).

During the month of April 2021, employers declared 2,937 job vacancies to the ADEM, which corresponds to an increase of 55% compared to April 2020. In April last year, the number of declared vacancies was particularly low: employers declared a total of 1,895 vacancies, i.e. 43.2% fewer posts than the year before.

As of 30 April 2021, the ADEM listed 8,289 vacancies in its database, an increase of 32.8% over one year.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate, calculated by STATEC, currently stands at 6.1%.
