Luxembourg hosted the Eurogroup and Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) meetings from Thursday 19 to Friday 20 June 2025.
As reported by Luxembourg's Ministry of Finance, finance ministers (including Luxembourg's Gilles Roth) discussed budgetary developments, competitiveness and productivity within the euro area during the Eurogroup meetings. They thus drew on a presentation given by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Discussions also focused on the current state of progress of the digital euro.
Moreover, the ministers took stock of Bulgaria's progress in the eurozone accession process, based on recent assessments by the European Commission and the European Central Bank (ECB).
During the ECOFIN meetings, the finance ministers discussed customs tax reform and held an initial exchange of views on the Spring Package, presented by the European Commission on Wednesday 4 June 2025, as part of the European Semester. Discussions also focused on recent developments in the energy sector in Europe and the financing of growing defence needs in the current geopolitical context.
Luxembourg's Minister of Finance, Gilles Roth, commented: "Luxembourg supports the digital euro project and innovation in finance. The EU must demonstrate its leadership - digital, strategic and regulatory. Progress is being made, but key issues need to be resolved in a legally sound manner."
On the sidelines of these meetings, Minister Roth participated in the annual meetings of the Board of Governors of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) and the European Investment Bank (EIB). He also met with his Estonian and Slovenian counterparts, Jürgen Ligi and Klemen Boštjančič, as well as with Danish Minister for Economic Affairs, Stephanie Lose.
