Crime thriller; 97 mins; 16+
Dan Lawson (Samuel L. Jackson), a Chicago detective, has hit the bottle and is seeing out the rest of his years on the force without the drive he used to have; the audience learns he has lost he girlfriend, the details of how are only revealed late on. His former partner, Walker Bravo (Vincent Cassel), has moved to Britain to write, but has also taken a job in security.
Together they had investigated a series of brutal murders by a serial killer, but without ever finding the culprit. Now, five years later, a similar killing is reported in Edinburgh, with DCI Glen Boyd (Gianni Capaldi) assigned to the case by his boss, Laura Kessler (Kate Dickie). He too, has his demons; his wife Marie (Laura Haddock) and he are mourning the loss of their young child, yet his escape is to throw himself into his work.
Dan Lawson is dispatched to Scotland, teams up with Glen Boyd and calls up his former partner, Walker Bravo, to try to solve the case. Before long, there is another killing and they start to identify potential suspects, including Colin McGregor (John Hannah).
A dark, gritty, Scottish film noir featuring protagonists with far-from-perfect characterisations. The crimes are gruesome but appear to be signalling a pattern, and the clues left by the killer in Scotland indicate that they know about the Chicago crimes. But can Boyd and Lawson work together to solve the crimes, identify the killer and, most importantly, prove their guilt?
