On Friday 8 May 2026, Luxembourgish nature conservation NGO natur&ëmwelt invited members of the public to participate in the fourth edition of its insect counting campaign (“Méi wéi Beien! Ziel mat!”) by observing the insects around their homes, in gardens, parks and orchards and reporting their findings.

Natur&ëmwelt said the campaign, which runs from Saturday 16 to Sunday 24 May, is designed to help establish a more accurate picture of the common insect species found in residential and urban areas. The observations collected will reveal long-term population changes, showing whether certain species or groups of species are becoming more or less prevalent.

The campaign focuses on insects that are easily recognisable and encountered in everyday life, such as hoverflies, bumblebees and ladybirds. Twelve species or groups of species will be recorded in total.

Natur&ëmwelt emphasised that taking part in the campaign is easy. It noted that insects are best counted on a sunny, calm day between 10:00 and 16:00 and an ideal location is a sunny spot with plenty of flowers, such as a garden, orchard or park. The observation area should not exceed a radius of around ten metres.

Participants can submit observations via the following form: https://de.surveymonkey.com/r/MWBZM2026.

Alternatively, observations can be submitted via the iNaturalist app.

Natur&ëmwelt said that in addition to collecting data, the campaign raises awareness of the importance of insects. It encourages people to take a closer look at the fascinating diversity of insects and to gain a better understanding of their essential role in nature.

The nature conservation NGO said: “It is not just biodiversity that is in decline — our knowledge of native insects is also being lost. We can only appreciate and protect what we know.”

School classes are also invited to take part in the campaign. Teachers can request participation sheets and accompanying educational material from Natur&ëmwelt by contacting the association secretary by tel: 290 4041 or email: secretariat@naturemwelt.lu.
