Luxembourg’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture together with the meteorological service of ASTA (AgriMeteo), Meteolux and the Water Management Agency (AGE), has published the meteorological report for winter 2025/2026.

According to the report, winter 2025/2026 recorded temperatures above the 1991 to 2020 climate average. Particularly mild conditions marked the end of 2025, followed by a slight cooling at the beginning of 2026. January temperatures remained close to, or in some regions slightly below, the seasonal average. February temperatures then rose again and stayed above seasonal norms, confirming the overall warmer trend.

In terms of precipitation, according to the report, winter was overall drier than normal. December brought a widespread rainfall deficit and January followed a similar pattern in most regions, except for Remich, where measurements showed a slight surplus. In February, precipitation increased, with Asselborn recording a surplus of up to 47.4 mm (+78%). The winter did not bring any significant flooding, although rivers overflowed in a few very localised areas along the Moselle in February.

The report shows that winter crops developed well despite localised damage that waterlogging caused on the heavy soils of the Gutland. Winter barley suffered the most, particularly where farmers carried out sowing in very wet autumn conditions. Farmers still needed to treat many fields against weeds and had to carry out these interventions quickly. In the Oesling, soils dried more quickly and farmers should begin work shortly, while in the Gutland they must wait for a drier period.

According to the data, vegetable crops remain stable but growers need additional precipitation to replenish water reserves. Vineyards also show a water deficit and require more rain or snow.
