On Wednesday 24 July 2024, Luxembourg's Water Management Authority announced that the swimming ban concerning the Upper Sûre Lake (at the Rommwiss and Burfelt beaches) has been lifted.

According to the authority, the proliferation of cyanobacteria (blue algae) detected last week at the beaches in the Upper Sûre Lake (accompanied by the presence of high concentrations of toxins produced by these cyanobacteria) the situation has returned to normal.

The drop in temperatures has led to a sharp decline in the cyanobacteria biomass. Recent analyses carried out by the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) have confirmed the dissipation of the blooms. This development in the situation puts an end to the alert for microbiological and toxic risks at the public health level linked to the presence of cyanobacteria blooms. The recreational and sporting activities can therefore resume.

The current situation regarding the opening or closing of official swimming sites can be followed online at www.waasser.lu.
