On9 July 2015, the same day as the meeting of the 'EU Fisheries Council Working Group' took place, Minister of Agriculture Fernand Etgen met with representatives of the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition and 'Sea Rose', a model of a roundnose grenadier fish.
'Sea Rose' arrived in Luxembourg after having travelled around various EU Member States to promote a new EU regulation aiming to put an end to the destruction of Europe's deep sea wildlife. Like most other deep-sea fish, roundnose grenadiers have slow sexual maturity and longer reproductive and life cycles (up to the age of 80) than other fish types, making them particularly vulnerable to fishing impacts.
Minister Etgen stated that although Luxembourg has no sea coasts, it wishes to share in the common interest of sustainable fishing and the protection of the European environment, on land and in the air, with the other Member States involved.
