Luxembourg has just inaugurated its most powerful wind farm, located in the municipality of Wincrange.

During a press conference held today, Luxembourg's Minister of Energy, Claude Turmes, took stock of the progress of development in the field of wind turbines. Similarly, the Mayor of Wincrange, Marcel Thommes, presented the development of wind power in his municipality, whilst Claude Boever, the operator of the wind farm, gave details of the new wind farm in Wincrange, which has the potential to provide green electricity to 30,000 inhabitants.

The new wind farm consists of seven wind turbines with a power of 3.3 MW each, giving the park a total power of 23.1 MW. With its production capacity of around 53 GWh per year, which is equivalent to around 20% of the energy produced by wind turbines in Luxembourg in 2018 (255 GWh), it will be able to supply around 30,000 people.

In the wind energy sector, Luxembourg has recorded growth over the past ten years which has further increased over the past four years. For instance, the electricity produced by wind turbines has increased by 418% during the last decade (2008-2018, from 61 to 255 GWh) and has made a real leap forward since 2016. In 2020, the electricity produced by wind turbines will reach around 314 GWh, which is equivalent to the consumption of around 170,000 people. Luxembourg therefore already exceeds its 2020 target at this stage in terms of electricity production from wind energy (2020 target: 239 GWh).

Moreover, the good progress made in recent years, as well as the many wind projects in the process of being authorised, have put Luxembourg on the right track to achieving its objectives for the years 2025 and 2030 in terms of electricity production from wind energy (objective 2025: 382 GWh / 2030 target: 674 GWh).
