On Friday 21 June 2019, energy supplier ista Luxembourg celebrated its 50 year anniversary with a ceremony at the Parc Hotel Alvisse in Luxembourg-Dommeldange.

On this occasion, the energy supplied reflected on its achievements to date, as well as its future plans. Since arriving in Luxembourg in 1969, ista has gradually become established and is now one of the market leaders in energy management and submetering, which ensures a fair distribution of costs in residential buildings based on individual consumption.

ista Luxembourg, the national subsidiary of the German ista group founded some 120 years ago and currently present in 24 countries across Europe and worldwide, installs measuring equipment and allocators, reads individual consumption data and breaks down collective utility costs. Approximately 30% of account statements are fully automated, requiring no physical presence or travel, and nearly 50% are semi-automated. For the last decade, ista Luxembourg has been using second generation radio frequency in tandem with a bidirectional communications system, providing monthly rather than annual data.

In the context of the transposition into national law of the new European Energy Efficiency Directive (EED), aimed at saving 32.5% of energy in the EU by 2030, ista Luxembourg has committed itself to creating digital systems that allow each user to monitor his/her individual consumption, thus providing every client with the possibility of adjusting his/her consumption and making energy savings. Similarly, with digitisation and innovation featuring among the tools for decarbonisation and environmental protection, the company will introduce services such as ista Smart Energy, smart rubbish bins and a communication platform in the future.

Regarding smoke detection legislation (smoke detectors must be installed in new buildings from January 2020 and over the three following years for existing buildings), ista has recalled the integration of their smoke detectors into the radio frequency system and the permanent monitoring of their smooth functioning. Other projects include awareness raising campaigns among school children and there are plans to import the “climate box” from Germany to Luxembourg.

ista Luxembourg also confirmed its focus on young people and the future, having announced its intake of a minimum of two apprentices per year and its continued contribute to the training of heating engineers from the Skills Centre (Centre de Compétences, CDC) in Contern. It

Finally, recent statistics have shown that, within the company, 40 people currently manage 52,000 end users, representing in excess of 300,000 measuring devices. Among these 40 employees, more than half are women and some have been working within the company for several decades. As part of this drive for diversity, this also extends to salary equality.
