This week at a press conference in Luxembourg city, La Société Luxemourgeoise des Énergies Renouvelables S.A. (Soler) presented its plans for expanding the number of wind turbines in Luxembourg.

The expansion will concist of four new “Wandpark” installations, consisting of a total of 24 state-of-the-art wind turbines, each capable of generating three Megawatts, which equates to a total of 18.9 KWh per year, enough to meet the electricity needs of 4,200 households of 4 people per turbine, or a total of 134,400 people across the 24 turbines.

The installation sites add to the 17 wind turbines already installed and  were chosen after extensive studies that took into consideration not only the amount of available wind, but also a host of environmental considerations including noise pollution, impact on flora and fauna (resident and migratory), residential impact, proximity to power lines and other objects and estimated return on investment.

In total, each wind turbine will save 4,100 tonnes of CO2 per year. The wind turbines have an estimated life of 20 years, and the CO2 cost of building, transporting, site preparation and installing one turbine is also approximately 4,100 tonnes of CO2, thus the CO2 cost is amortised after only 5% of the projected life of the turbines.

The new turbines will be situated as follows:
West – Redange – 6 turbines
Centre – Mersch – 6 turbines
East – Medernach – 3 turbines
South – Mondercange – 6 turbines
