A petition started on Thursday 3 March 2016 has advocated for the immediate shutdown of the Cattenom nuclear power station just across the border in France.
The petition was started following the latest findings and reports on the state of the nuclear power station.
The author of the petition has called for the closure of Cattenom, claiming that the accident which occurred there on Tuesday 8 March 2016 was one in a long line of similar or more severe incidents in recent years and that Cattenom does not follow the European and French minimum requirements for old nuclear power stations.
Marc Schmit, the author of petition 621, included the findings of Manfred Mertins, an expert in nuclear safety in Global Research for Safety (GRS) who said:
“In the event of a core meltdown the operator of the nuclear power plant Cattenom, EDF, could not conclusively explain how the pressure in the primary circuit could safely be unloaded. In case of failure of all safety systems there is only one "related basic protection" to prevent nuclear catastrophe. The most serious deficiency is that a meltdown in the facility would not be manageable.”
