77th Anniversary of Founding of People's Republic of China Celebrated in Luxembourg

On the evening of Thursday 24 September 2026, the Chinese Ambassador to Luxembourg, Hua Ning, hosted a reception at the Parc Hotel Alvisse in Luxembourg-Dommeldange to mark the 77th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC).

Guests included Luxembourg Minister of Finance Gilles Roth, British Ambassador to Luxembourg Joanne Olivier, Dutch Ambassador to Luxembourg Carin Lobbezoo and Deputy Mayor of Luxembourg City Maurice Bauer, alongside members of the diplomatic community, business leaders and members of the local Chinese community.

The evening began with the playing of the national anthems of the People's Republic of China and Luxembourg and was followed by the introduction of members of the visiting delegations from China, along with a display of traditional Chinese clothing.

Chinese Ambassador to Luxembourg Hua Ning then delivered a welcome speech in which he spoke of the characteristics of China in relation to the five letters which make up the country's name. He touched on China’s rich history as a civilisation [C], the harmony [H] of its ethnic communities, the country’s continued technical innovation [I], the importance of its natural assets [N] and its various accomplishments [A].

Ambassador Hua Ning said: “China advocates a community with a shared future for mankind, upholds multilateralism and has put forward four global initiatives on development, security, civilisation and governance. The Chinese people and the people across the world all aspire to a better life. Our shared responsibility is to make it happen.”

Ambassador Hua Ning reflected on how China’s relationship with Europe has flourished since the first flights from Shanghai landed in Paris in 1966, and today sees collaborations in the fields of finance, aviation, logistics and e-commerce. He remarked: “We can accomplish more together than we can alone.”

In closing, the ambassador offered a toast to “the prosperity of China and Luxembourg and our friendship”.

Minister Roth then gave a speech in which he too celebrated Luxembourg’s ongoing relationship with the People's Republic of China and the PRC’s growth and development in the 77 years since its founding.

“Seventy-seven years of profound transformation and also rapid development. Over these decades, China has undergone remarkable economic, social, scientific and also technological change. It has also become deeply connected with the wider world. An extraordinary journey. A journey that never fails to fascinate me whenever I travel to China,” remarked Minister Roth.

He added: “Luxembourg and China enjoy a strong and also long-standing relationship. A relationship based on mutual respect, dialogue and also practical cooperation for the good of both our people.”

Minister Roth highlighted the success of China’s decision to undertake its sovereign bond issuance on the Luxembourg Stock Exchange (LuxSE) in 2025, as well as the two country’s cooperation in capital markets, digital finance and sustainable finance. 

“Trade, investment, logistics, innovation and technology connect our economies in very concrete ways. Luxembourg companies are active in China, while Chinese companies have found in Luxembourg a gateway to the European market. There is considerable potential to deepen these links further, particularly as innovation, AI and the green transition continue to shape our economies. But relations between countries are ultimately built by people. The Chinese community in Luxembourg makes an important contribution to our country and to the ties between our two societies. Students, entrepreneurs, researchers, professionals and families create connections that go far beyond economies,” said Minister Roth.

“On the 77th anniversary, I wish the people of China peace, prosperity and also happiness. And I extend that wish to all of us here tonight.”

Following the speeches, the reception concluded with a networking buffet reception.
