On Monday 6 June, the U.S. Embassy hosted Mr. Evgeny Afineevsy, the director and producer of the Oscar-nominated Netlix original documentary entitled Winter on Fire which chronicles the unrest in Ukraine during 2013 and 2014 as student demonstrations supporting European integration grew into a violent revolution calling for the resignation of President Viktor F. Yanukovich.
Ambassador McKean hosted a luncheon and round table discussion with representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ukrainian Community in Luxembourg, the Luxembourg film industry and Claude Radoux, Honorary Consul for Ukraine.
Later in the afternoon, a special viewing of Winter on Fire was organised at the Cercle Cité. The audience included people from all sectors in Luxembourg. After the screening of the film, Evgeny Afineevsy opened a Q&A session where he spoke about unity, the Winter on Fire theme most significant to him. He returned again and again to the power of unified people: “the people were the leaders of Maidan Square; the people decided to change things,” asserting that this common, but compelling, portrayal applies around the world.
