Following the Garage Sale event held in Bereldange on Saturday in aid of refugee women, hosted by Jugera Ibrahimi, the Chargé d'Affaires a.i., Alison shorter-Lawrence, and US Embassy staff spent the morning of Tuesday 8 March 2016 at a Lily Unden refugee centre in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg to celebrate this International Women's Day.
Friend of the US Embassy Jugera Ibrahimi put in a lot of hard work over the past week to collect gifts for women at the centre, and kind women from all over the Grand Duchy donated many wonderful items. This morning, US Embassy staff helped distribute gifts and brought snacks for everyone to enjoy.
Jugera Ibrahimi is also involved with the Dress for Success initiative, is an ambassador for The Network and a volunteer with the Red Cross.
Women and girls comprise nearly half of the population in the refugee shelters. Although there are a number of organisations that work with them and assist them to the best extend possible, there are still things that could be done by the community.
Unlike many residents who love fashion, look forward to buying the next dress, to find the place celebrate the next birthday, going to the next party or simply being at home watching TV while cooking our favorite meal, this is impossible in the life of a refugee. Most of the time they stay inside, waiting for the next meal and for potential activities organised by the respective shelters.
The money generated as a result of the private sale served to buy gifts for the women of the refugee shelter distributed today, International Women's Day.
