On 8 May, the Institute of Cognitive Science and Assessment (COSA) presents a discussion of the challenges presented by Vasily Davydo´s developmental teaching approach, based on Lev Vygotsky’s work in education and applied linguistics, which was always considered too challenging to be used widely in schools.
Vygotsky is a well-known author in the field of Education and Applied Linguistics. However, pedagogies based on his assumptions are less recognised outside of the former Soviet Union. One of these is Davydov´s approach (Davydov, 1988), called developmental teaching (Chaiklin, 2001), which due to its innovative and challenging character is not widely used in schools even in Russia. In addition, teacher education in this perspective is not frequently addressed.
This discussion aims to discuss the challenges this pedagogy poses on teachers and students and to reclaim its relevance in the current educational context.
Starting at 16:00 in the Black Box in the Maison des Sciences Humaines on The Belval Campus of the University of Luxemrboug, the discussion is led by Professor Marilia Mendes Ferreira (Universidade de Sao Paulo).
