The Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg have announced their programme for the 2019/20 season, featuring performances in theatre, dance and opera.

The programme for the season by Theatre Director Tom Leick-Burns will once again represent a dynamic and international range of performances whilst integrating local creators. It will cover productions at both the Grand Théâtre and the Théâtre des Capucins.

Dance highlights

Vivaldi Variations by Spellbound Contemporary Ballet and Orchestre de Chambre du Luxembourg, in collaboration with the Italian Embassy in Luxembourg, on 25 and 26 September 2019 at 20:00. Season opening and tribute to violinist and Baroque composer Antonio Vavaldi, featuring two choreographers, one from Luxembourg – Jean-Guillaume Weis – and one from Italy – Mauro Astolfi. Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes (plus intermission). Tickets cost €15/€20/€25 for adults and €8 for young people.

Xenos by Akram Khan Company on 17 and 18 October 2019 at 20:00. Akram Khan won the Olivier Award for outstanding achievement in dance in 2019 for his solo performance in Xenos. Duration: 65 minutes (plus intermission). Tickets cost €15/€20/€25 for adults and €8 for young people.

- Acosta Danza by Sadler’s Wells and Valid Productions on 29 and 30 November 2019 at 20:00. Features works by Raúl Reinoso, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Pontus Lidberg and Christopher Bruce. Duration: 1 hour 25 minutes (plus intermission). Tickets cost €15/€20/€25 for adults and €8 for young people.

Session duet by renowned traditional Irish dance artist Colin Dunne and inter-nationally revered Flemish-Moroccan choreographer and dancer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui on 21 and 22 January 2020 at 20:00. Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes (no intermission). Tickets cost €15/€20/€25 for adults and €8 for young people.

New Work (2020) by Michael Clark Company on 13 and 14 February 2020 at 20:00. Ambitious new production (still in production) from critically acclaimed British choreographer Michael Clark. Features nine dancers. Duration: tbc. Tickets cost €15/€20/€25 for adults and €8 for young people.

Enter Achilles, presented by Ballet Rambert and Sadler’s Well, on 21 March at 20:00 and on 22 March 2020 at 17:00. A work by Lloyd Newson (DV8 Physical Theatre). Part of the Théâtres de la Ville’s season on violence. Not suitable for under-15s. Duration: 1 hour 20 minutes (no intermission). Tickets cost €15/€20/€25 for adults and €8 for young people. 

Message in a Bottle, presented by Sadler's Well and Universal Music UK, on 26, 27 and 28 March 2020 at 20:00. Choreography by Kate Prince, based on the songs of Sting with Zoonation. Features over 20 dancers. Duration: tbc (still in production). Tickets cost €15/€20/€25 for adults and €8 for young people.

The Strange Tale of Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel told by an idiot on 9 and 10 January 2020 at 20:00. Directed by Paul Hunter. The Quest by Cédric Eeckhout on 4 May at 18:30 and on 5 May 2020 at 20:00. Part of the Théâtres de la Ville’s season on Europe. Introduction to the play, in English, by Janine Goedert 30 minutes before every performance. Round Table on Europe after the first performance of The Quest at the Théâtre des Capucins on Monday 4 May. Duration: tbc (still in production). In English with French subtitles. 

 

Opera highlights

Cabaret, presented by Ben Kenwright, on 23, 26, 27, 29 and 30 December at 20:00, on 28 December at 15:00 and 20:00 and on 31 December 2019 at 19:00, as well as on 2, 3 and 5 January at 20:00 and on 4 January 2020 at 15:00 and 20:00. Based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood. The New Year's Eve performance will be followed by a dinner party in the Grand Théâtre’s foyer. Duration: 2 hours 15 minutes (plus intermission). In English with French and German subtitles. Tickets cost €25/€40/€65 for adults and €8 for young people.

The Sleeping Thousand on 8 January 2020 at 20:00. Directed by Yonatan Levy and composed by Adam Maor, in collaboration with the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and the Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg with the United Instruments of Lucilin ensemble. Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes (no intermission). In Hebrew with English and French subtitles. Introduction to the show in French by the "Amis de l'Opéra" 30 minutes before the performance. Tickets cost €15/€20/€25 for adults and €8 for young people.
