Craft brewery Jopen received ten awards at the World Beer Awards, almost a quarter of the 43 awards that went to Dutch breweries. This makes Jopen the top scoring Dutch brewery in the competition. Six Jopen beers were named Country Winner, three beers won gold awards and one was awarded silver. Out of all Country Winners, Jopen Life’s a Beach won the title of ‘World’s Best Style Winner’ in the ‘Session IPA’ category.
Hop-forward beers
Craft brewery Jopen scored exceptionally well in the hop-forward beer categories. Besides Jopen North Sea IPA, Jopen Hop Zij Met Ons (a gluten-free IPA) was crowned Country Winner in the "Gluten-free" category. Jopen Jacobus RPA received the same award in the ‘Rye’ category, as did Jopen Life’s a Beach, which also won the title of "World’s Best Style Winner". Finally, Jopen Extra Stout and Jopen Doubting Thomas were both Country Winners in the categories ‘Stout’ and ‘Belgian-style Strong’.
Three Jopen beers won gold medals. Jopen 4-grain Bok was awarded a gold medal in the "Bock" style. During the 2017 World Beer Awards, this bock beer was Country Winner and crowned ‘World’s Best’ in the "Dark Beer – Brown Ale" category. That same year, while competing at the Dutch Beer Challenge, this bock won a gold medal. The four-grain bock has roasted and fruity tones, because Jopen added roasted rye malt to the traditional Haarlem brewing ingredients barley, oats and wheat.
Finally, Jopen Adriaan Wit took home the gold in the "Belgian-style Witbier" category and Jopen Koyt was awarded the gold medal in the ‘Heritage Beers’ category. Jopen Trinitas Tripel was able to secure the last award, a silver medal in the "Belgian-style Triple" category.
The World Beer Awards 2018 is one of the leading beer competitions in the world. The international, highly respected jury judged each beer based on blind tasting. The World’s Best Beers will be announced in London on Thursday 20 September 2018.
