Luxembourg’s Ministry of Mobility and Public Works has reported that Minister Yuriko Backes visited the “piste rouge” (“red cycle path”) along Rue des Scillas in Luxenbourg-Howald on Thursday 10 July 2025.

According to the Ministry, this is the second cycle path in Luxembourg featuring a red surface, following the section of the PC8 in Esch-sur-Alzette, which Minister Backes inaugurated on Friday 6 June 2025.

The resurfacing of this new “red track”, part of the PC1 central cycle path forming a complete loop around Luxembourg City, cost €50,000. Covering a distance of 500 metres, it allows cyclists to travel safely towards Cloche d’Or and Boulevard de Kyiv, noted the Ministry.

These red-surfaced cycle paths offer several benefits, including improved safety thanks to their distinctive colouring. The Ministry explained that this specific design both “reinforces the identity” of the cycle path and enhances its visibility in all weather conditions by clearly separating it from pedestrian areas and motorised traffic. The initiative also aims to encourage greater use by cyclists and promote “better coexistence” with other road users.

Speaking during the visit, Minister Backes highlighted the importance of developing safe and visible cycling infrastructure in urban areas: "The gradual implementation of red trails throughout Luxembourg is one of the priorities for facilitating and promoting the use of bicycles as a sustainable mode of transport among our fellow citizens. Accessible to all, the bicycle must now be considered a genuine means of daily transport that is respectful and beneficial for both our environment and our health.“
