On Tuesday 28 July 2026, the City Open Air Cinema concluded this year's screenings at Place Guillaume II (Knuedler) in Luxembourg-Ville, with organisers announcing a record attendance of more than 5,500 visitors over the course of the week.
The annual event, organised by the Cinémathèque de la Ville de Luxembourg and the City of Luxembourg (VdL), offered free outdoor screenings of films in their original language with French or English subtitles. Admission was free and seating operated on a first-come, first-served basis.
Chronicle.lu attended the closing screening of Little Miss Sunshine on Tuesday evening. The Academy Award-winning tragicomedy, directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris and starring Abigail Breslin, Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Paul Dano and Alan Arkin, follows the dysfunctional Hoover family on a road trip across the United States as they accompany their young daughter, Olive, to a children's beauty pageant.
Around 500 chairs were available for spectators, while many others brought their own camping chairs or watched the film from nearby cafés and restaurants overlooking Place Guillaume II. As in previous years, drinks, popcorn and snacks were available for purchase on-site.
Screenings began shortly after sunset, following a brief introduction by the Cinémathèque team.
Although the programme at Place Guillaume II has now concluded, the City Open Air Cinema will return from Thursday 6 to Saturday 8 August 2026 at Place Léon XIII in Luxembourg-Bonnevoie.
