The Lycée Vauban in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg has donated €1,000 to Handicap International Luxembourg after the finale of the winter show the students had organised on Friday 26 February 2016 in the Luxembourg city Conservatory.

The cheque was presented by Mr. Hiebel, Principal of Lycée Vauban, to Mr. Delandmeter, Chairman of Handicap International Luxembourg, and Mrs. Degeest, member of the Board of Directors of Handicap International Luxembourg.

The winter production put on by the students attracted a total of 540 spectators and involved 80 students participating on stage. The production was part of a series of events focused on the students' studies in their citizenship, tolerance and solidarity.

“Last September the students, teachers, and Handicap International started raising awareness of the problem of victims of conflicts in the world; the organisation of the Winter show by our students for the benefit of Handicap International illustrates our concrete support for the actions of the association," said Principal Hiebel.

The amount collected and donated will go towards aiding Handicap International in its efforts in Syria, where it has been active since 2013.

Handicap International takes emergency actions to help and support those vulnerable and affected by the conflict of the region. They rely in particular on the local humanitarian organisations of the area. The aid given ranges from the distribution of goods and essential commodities to improving access of essential services to such vulnerable people through sessions psychosocial support and physiotherapy.

The association also organises awareness sessions for the people in Syria of the risks related to the presence of explosive remnants of war. These are also open to Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries in the anticipation of the possibility that they will find themselves back in areas affected by fighting.

"The Syrian conflict, which began in spring 2011, has already killed and wounded several hundred thousands of people. Civilians, and especially children, are the main victims of this bloody conflict. Initiatives such as that of the Lycée Vauban are essential to help the Syrian people," said Martin Lamb, Director of Handicap International Luxembourg.
