The fourth edition of Smart Manufacturing Week, organised on the initiative of Luxinnovation, kicked off on Wednesday morning with an online session covering the digital landscape in Luxembourg.

The event, which is taking place from 17 to 19 November 2021, provides an opportunity to take stock of best practice in the digital and ecological transformation of industry.

Wednesday's opening session looked at the digital landscape in the Grand Duchy, particularly the Digital Innovation Hub, the national high performance computer, the European data infrastructure initiative GAIA-X and e-DIH, the European network of Digital Innovation Hubs. Luxembourg's Minister of the Economy, Franz Fayot, delivered the opening speech.

In the afternoon, a phygital event took place in Esch-Belval. On this occasion, the figures of the first-ever mapping of Luxembourg’s manufacturing sector were presented. A round table discussion with representatives of the Ministry of Economy and some companies focused on the different challenges that companies are facing. This session ended with the awarding of the 2021 PropdPilot Grand Prix, which rewards the companies in the Greater Region that have been the most innovative in terms of improving their productivity.

The programme of the remaining two days will be exclusively dedicated to testimonies of companies that have initiated "smart" transformations of their processes and adopted sustainable economy technologies.

"In order to be able to remain competitive today, develop resilience and address the ecological challenges of the future, manufacturing companies constantly need to boost their efficiency and innovative capacities", explained Caroline Muller, Manager of the Luxembourg Materials & Manufacturing Cluster at Luxinnovation. "Two key steps to achieve this are the uptake and widespread use of digital technologies and an ‘Industry 4.0’ approach, and the adoption of environmentally friendly processes".
