Neimënster has announced that on 25 and 26 September 2015, it will be hosting a conference, co-organised with the déi Lénk party and the Party of the European Left, on the attitude of left-wing parties, unions and peace movements in Europe and Luxembourg.
Conference speakers, including historians, sociologists and political and social figures from Luxembourg and further afield, will attempt to draw lessons from World War I that could serve to address the wars of today.
The symposium will take place 100 years after the Zimmerwald Conference on 1915, during which representatives of leftist parties from countries involved in the war struggled in vain to find a strategy to place class war on the frontline rather than the war of nations.
At the 2015 conference, the public will hear from and engage in discussion with Luxembourgish historian Denis Scuto, Belgian historian Anne Morelli, Scottish historian Murray Smith and Ukrainian sociologist and Deputy Director of the Centre for Social Research in Kiev, Volodymir Ischenko, amongst others.
'1915-2015: Face à la Guerre' will take place on Friday 25 September 2015 from 16:00 to 20:30, and on Saturday 26 September 2015 from 10:00 to 17:00 at the Salle Edmond Dune in Neimënster.
