On Thursday 27 October 2022, Luxembourg's Minister of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development, Claude Haagen, participated in a meeting with the representatives who work for the protection of animals, namely the Association for the protection of animals Schifflange, Ein Herz für Streuner, National League for the Protection of Animals and Regional Animal Asylum Dudelange.
The topics raised during this round table, among other things, focused on questions of sterilisation and identification of cats, knowing that associations for the protection of animals have the possibility of being approved by the Ministry of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development and can then benefit from financial support.
Another topic of importance was the lack of infrastructure to house animals seized, confiscated, abandoned or surrendered by their owners. In this context, Minister Haagen stressed that the installation of additional infrastructure, for example in the North of the country, could partially remedy this situation.
With regard to the growing influx of animals into asylums, Minister Haagen recalled that the purchase of a pet must be a thoughtful and responsible act. “It is therefore important to raise awareness so that future pet owners are aware of the responsibilities and costs involved in acquiring a pet”, said Minister Haagen. It was agreed to launch an information campaign aimed at the general public for this purpose.
