Following the lifting of COVID-19 measures that limited in-person gatherings, this year witnesses an increase in celebrations of festivals and events, including four different Diwali celebrations taking place in Luxembourg in 2022.
Diwali is a major Hindu festival commonly known as the “festival of lights” which symbolises the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance". Diwali is celebrated around the world mainly by Hindus but also Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists, amongst other religious faiths, according to the Hindu calendar which falls between mid-October and mid-November.
The main day of the festival of Diwali is an official holiday in Fiji, Guyana, India, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago. In India and around the world, Hindus decorate their homes and workplaces with “diyas” (oil lamps) and “rangolis” (colourful art patterns), light fireworks, organise family and community feasts, and share sweets and presents, in addition to worshipping and praying to different gods and goddesses.
In Luxembourg, the people of Indian nationality has increased more than doubled in last five years, 4,825 as of 1 October 2022, and accordingly more clubs and associations are organising different events. Hindu Forum Luxembourg kicked off Diwali celebrations on Friday 21 October 2022 while Indian Association Luxembourg and Tamil Sangam Luxembourg announced their Diwali celebrations taking place on Saturday 29 and on Sunday 30 October 2022, respectively. The Indian Business Chamber of Luxembourg (IBCL) is organising a corporate Diwali get-together on 23 November 2022 after a three-year absence.
This year, Holi (16 July 2022), Onam (24 September 2022) and Durga Puja (1 to 4 October 2022) were amongst other Hindu festivals, which were celebrated in Luxembourg.
