The Luxembourg Chapter of the Ilula Orphan Program (IOP) has launched a fresh appeal for donations to support vulnerable children and young people during the COVID-19 pandemic in rural Tanzania.
Over the past 20 years, sponsors of children in Tanzania and other IOP donors living in Luxembourg have funded the construction of a new primary school at IOP in Tanzania. Helen Clarke, President of IOP in Luxembourg, and her band Alizeti raised over €16,000 playing in pubs around Luxembourg City and others gave hundreds and even thousands of euros to accomplish this project. The Luxembourg government added a further 80% of the money collected to the total sum. Luxembourg eventually contributed €250,000 to the project.
The IOP in Luxembourg built the Sunflower pre- and primary school in Ilula, which is attended by 278 children (of which 60 are boarding). This school is a part of what IOP has grown into: a centre for education and care in a region in great need.
According to the Luxembourg chapter, all of the efforts of the past 20 years at IOP in Tanzania are now in danger as COVID-19 spreads throughout Ilula. As such, IOP has called once again on the support of Luxembourg residents to help enable IOP Tanzania to continue working through this crisis, and to rebuild afterwards.
To support this cause, donations can be made to the IOP-LUX asbl (IBAN LU27 0019 3955 9582 3000, Reference: "IOP Covid Aid 2021". IOP-LUX is a registered NGO with the Luxembourg government: all donations are tax-deductible.
