On Monday 23 July 2018, a hydroelectric dam under construction collapsed in south-eastern Laos, killing at least 19 people; hundreds more are still missing and more than 6,500 people have lost their homes.

The ongoing monsoon in Laos is causing heavy rains and severe flooding, causing widespread damage and casualties throughout the country. In total, tens of thousands of people are affected by these various disasters.

Caritas Luxembourg is helping victims and is currently helping to distribute essential items such as mosquito nets, clothes, shoes and household goods. With a local office that employs 27 people and a permanent Luxembourg co-worker on the spot, Caritas Luxembourg has been supporting the development of Laos - one of the poorest countries in Southeast Asia - for more than a decade through projects aimed at food security, education or the reduction of risks related to natural disasters.

To support the victims of the floods and help them in the long reconstruction that will follow, Caritas Luxembourg has issued a call for donations. These can be made by transfer to the account (CCPL) IBAN LU34 1111 0000 2020 0000 with the communication "Flood Laos". It is also possible to donate online at www.caritas.lu
