On Wednesday 7 October 2026, Luxembourg’s Ministry of Finance reported on the launch of the country’s first benchmark sovereign bond natively based on blockchain technology.

The ministry reported that during his presentation of the 2027 draft budget, Luxembourg’s Minister of Finance Gilles Roth announced that, following the launch of a digital treasury certificate in 2025, the Grand Duchy will issue a benchmark sovereign bond natively based on blockchain technology. The issuance, with a target amount of at least €1 billion and an anticipated maturity of ten years, will be a first in Europe.

The ministry said: “Governed by Luxembourg law and denominated in euros, it will benefit from all the necessary market infrastructures to meet the expectations of institutional investors. Thanks to its integration into a regulated and proven environment, it is expected to be eligible as collateral in Eurosystem credit operations, thereby contributing to its liquidity and attractiveness. It will also be listed on the Luxembourg Stock Exchange.”

The exact issuance date will be determined based on investor interest and market conditions.
