Steel manufacturing corporation ArcelorMittal, headquartered in Luxembourg, received the 'Excellence in Sustainability' award at the 49th Worldsteel conference held in Chicago on Monday.
ArcelorMittal's 10 Sustainable Development Outcomes, as outlined in its 2014 sustainability report, allowed the company to bypass the competition from China Steel Corporation for their development of a by-product fuelled industrial park and Tata Steel Europe for the certification of 19 construction products for responsible sourcing, establishing it as a 2014 recipient of a World Steel Association 'Steelie' award.
The award represents an accolade for one specific sustainability initiative or programme which has provided a positive impact or benefit in the three areas of sustainability of economic, environmental and social performance. This is assessed on the extent of the initiative's impact of the company or society, how widely the idea was communicated to stakeholders, and what reach the initiative had with the community or stakeholders. Whilst ArcelorMittal has been shortlisted for the award every year since the award began in 2010, this Steelie represents the company's second for excellence in sustainability.
"ArcelorMittal's 10 Sustainable Development Outcomes were launched this year to provide a fresh approach to identifying the contribution the company - and wider steel industry - can make to a sustainable future in which steel plays a valuable contribution," commented Alan Knight, General Manager, Corporate Responsibility. "The outcomes are supported by a sustainable development framework that describes the management steps the company will take to get there, We believe that through this framework, we will raise the profile of steel, and catalyse stakeholder interest in the contribution it has to make to a sustainable future."
Sustainability is an important aspect in the future of the Grand Duchy, forming an integral part of economist Jeremy Rifkin's Third Industrial Revolution which he intends to establish as a new economic model for Luxembourg.

2. Innovation of the year: POSCO for lean duplex stainless steel with super ductility using a strip-casting process
3. Excellence in Life Cycle Assessment: Tata Steel Europe for the use of LCA to demonstrate the impact of the reuse of steel in a world class circular economy building in Holland
4. Excellence in Education and Training: Tata Steel Europe for developing a blended learning course for young people transitioning to management: Steelie Award winner.
5. Journalist of the Year: Joseph Innace (Platts)
6. Industry Communicator of the Year: John Ferriola (Nucor)
