On Monday 4 May 2026, the City of Luxembourg (Ville de Luxembourg - VdL) formalised its accession to the communal pact for intercultural living together, concluded between the College of the Mayor and Aldermen, Luxembourg’s Minister of Family, Solidarity, Living Together and Reception of Refugees Max Hahn, and the President of Syndicate of Luxembourg Cities and Municipalities (SYVICOL), Emile Eicher.

This accession aims to reflect commitment to continue and strengthen VdL’s efforts to promote social cohesion among residents and workers on its territory. With a multicultural population, of which more than 70% of residents are of non-Luxembourgish nationality, the VdL said it has for many years pursued an integration policy reflected in concrete initiatives that promote intercultural dialogue and exchange, as well as the active participation of citizens in social, economic and political life.

Alderwoman Corinne Cahen, responsible for integration policy and initiator of the communal pact within the framework of her former role as Luxembourg’s Minister of Family and Integration, welcomed this development: “Accession to the communal pact for intercultural living together constitutes a logical step for the City of Luxembourg, which has had a municipal service dedicated to the integration of citizens since 2012. It will, thanks to methodological support and additional resources made available by the ministry, allow the development of new projects and the deepening of existing initiatives, in the service of an ever more inclusive multicultural society.”

In cooperation with the municipal advisory commission on integration, associations active in the intercultural field and various municipal services, the Integration and Specific Needs Service works to identify needs linked to cultural diversity and to develop an appropriate action plan in order to respond as effectively as possible to existing needs.

The VdL highlighted that among the flagship initiatives in the field of living together are the “Rencontres sans frontières”, the organisation of Luxembourgish language and culture courses, the “Welcome Celebrations”, the annual event “MusiqCITE - Intercultural, Musical and Civic Encounters”, as well as participation in the Festival of Migration, Cultures and Citizenship.

The VdL stated that the communal pact for intercultural living together will provide new perspectives and strengthen actions aimed at promoting an open city that attracts expatriates and students from around the world.
