On Tuesday 27 January 2026, Luxembourg Minister of Labour, Marc Spautz, joined commemorative associations, the Jewish community of Luxembourg and other officials in Esch-sur-Alzette to mark the International Day Commemorating the Victims of the Shoah.

The commemorative ceremony took place at Synagogue Square, where stones are laid in remembrance as the names of the Jewish deportees from Esch-sur-Alzette are read out.

Those in attendance included Christian Weis, Mayor of the City of Esch-sur-Alzette, Rabbi Alexander Grodensky and David Weis, President of the Israelite Community of Esch-sur-Alzette and Georges Santer, President of MemoShoah and Jean McDonald, Ambassador of Ireland to Luxembourg.

The International Day Commemorating the Victims of the Shoah was established by the United Nations in 2005. It marks the liberation of the Nazi extermination camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945 by the Red Army.
