On Tuesday 27 January 2026, the Grand Ducal Police released a report following the completion of its “Gutt Gesinn” (“Good Sense”) winter road safety campaign.
From Monday 19 January to Sunday 25 January 2026, the police carried out checks across Luxembourg as part of the campaign. The checks focused on two aspects of the Highway Code: driver visibility (condition of windows, lighting, etc.); compliance with right-of-way rules in road traffic.
According to the report, in total 262 fixed-penalty notices and 45 warning reports were issued during the campaign period, including 162 for lighting defects (brake lights, dipped headlights, main beams, etc.), five for visibility-related offences (insufficiently clear driver view, objects obstructing the driver’s view or located within the field of vision, non-compliant windscreen or side glazing, etc.) and 18 due to illegible registration or identification plates.
In 84 cases, drivers were fined for failing to comply with a red traffic light and in 34 cases for failure to observe a priority “Stop” sign.
Moreover, in four cases, drivers did not stop at a pedestrian crossing or a pedestrian and cyclist crossing when a pedestrian had indicated an intention to use it or was already using it.
The police noted that warning reports are issued in cases of non-compliance. Drivers were not fined automatically but were granted a period of five days to bring their vehicle into compliance with the legislation. The offenders were then required to present themselves at a police unit after rectifying the defects.
