On Wednesday 7 January 2026, the Grand Ducal Police published the final report on their “Wanterzäit 2025” Road Safety Campaign, which ran from mid-October to the end of December 2025.

As part of its overall road safety prevention strategy, police carried out targeted checks specifically focusing on vehicle visibility and technical condition. According to the report in total more than 2,529 fixed penalty notices were issued as part of this campaign.

Among these, 321 fixed penalty notices were issued for non-compliance or failure to use vehicle lighting (main beam headlights, dipped headlights and rear lights).

A further 188 fines were issued in relation to tyre irregularities (for example insufficient tread depth or the absence of winter tyres).

In 2,020 cases, defects relating to vehicle documentation or technical condition were identified. In 629 of these cases, drivers were unable to present a valid roadworthiness certificate at the time of the check, and in 75 of the recorded cases, vehicles were fitted with non-compliant or unauthorised number plates, or with plates that were poorly legible or incorrectly affixed.

In addition to this 462 warning notices relating to lighting defects were issued during the preventive phase of the campaign.

The police advised that in cases of non-compliance, drivers were not fined automatically but were given a period of five days to bring their vehicle into compliance with the legislation. Offenders were then required to report to a police unit after remedying the defects.

The police emphasised that for the safety of all road users, good visibility and the sound technical condition of vehicles play a crucial role, particularly during this dark season characterised by fog, rain, cold weather and reduced visibility, and they will therefore continue to carry out this type of check as part of their daily preventive duties.

The police offered the following advice:

• See and be seen: in terms of general road safety, drivers must be vigilant and ensure they can clearly see what is happening around them. This includes checking that the lights are working and that the vehicle windows are clear. For pedestrians, runners and cyclists, it is important to be visible to other road users, even from a distance;

• Vehicle's technical condition: vehicles must be in perfect technical condition. Depending on the weather, tyres must be suitable for the conditions and a clear field of vision must be guaranteed;

• Safety distance and driving style: keeping an adequate distance from the vehicle in front, opting for a driving style adapted to the weather conditions and complying with speed limits are also essential.
