The Luxembourg Ministry of State has announced that the Government Council (Cabinet) met on Friday 12 December 2025 under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Luc Frieden and approved a draft law implementing the protection of geographical indications for artisanal and industrial products.

According to the ministry, European Regulation No 2023/2411 on the protection of geographical indications for artisanal and industrial products has been applicable in the 27 European Union Member States since Monday 1 December 2025 and establishes a specific protection system for artisanal and industrial products such as textiles, lace, glass, porcelain, jewellery and cutlery, in order to promote local expertise, cultural heritage and territorial identity.

The draft law adopted by the Government Council (Cabinet) designates, among others, the competent national authorities (ILNAS, the judicial police and the Customs and Excise Administration) to verify product compliance and the correct use of geographical indications and provides for sanctions in case of violations.

The ministry noted that as Luxembourg benefits from a derogation granted by the European Commission, Luxembourgish producers must submit their applications directly to the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), while the necessary provisions will be introduced into national law to ensure proper implementation of the European regulation in Luxembourg.
