On Friday 5 December 2025, the Grand Ducal Police issued details of their planned presence at winter markets across Luxembourg, along with advice for those attending the events.

The Grand Ducal Police said that during the winter markets in Luxembourg City and across the country, the police will maintain a visible presence at and around the events every year. Officers will carry out regular preventive patrols, either in targeted operations or as part of their general territorial monitoring duties.

In Luxembourg City, where the various markets traditionally attract large numbers of visitors, the police will maintain a visible presence at and around the markets at Place de la Constitution, Place d’Armes, Place de Paris, Place Guillaume II, Place Émile Hamilius and Kinnekswiss.

Local police officers will carry out regular security and prevention patrols, particularly during peak hours. Visitors can approach officers on site if they need assistance.

The police will also carry out preventive patrols at other markets across the country. As with other events that attract large crowds, the police coordinate closely with event organisers and the relevant communal authorities to define security plans in advance. Officers continuously assess the situation and adjust their operations to respond effectively if the need arises. The authorities keep the details of these operations confidential.

The Grand Ducal Police highlighted that as with all festive events which attract large numbers of people, the year-end markets may draw dishonest individuals, including pickpockets. They also advised visitors to remain particularly alert and issued the following recommendations:

• stay attentive when in a crowd (for example, in queues);

• be cautious when using crowded transport, do not allow oneself to be distracted and keep, as far as possible, one’s distance from strangers;

• remain especially vigilant when boarding or leaving transport, as pickpockets often seek direct physical contact;

• keep your wallet in the inner pocket of your jacket, which is less accessible to thieves than outer pockets;

• stay alert near cash machines and when making payments: do not allow distractions and ask those around you to maintain distance;

• avoid showing the contents of one’s wallet to others;

• only carry the money or bank cards that you genuinely need;

• secure your handbag between your arm and your body, turning the opening inward;

• never take your eyes off your handbag;

• avoid physical contact with people you do not know. Trick thieves may try to approach victims by bumping or making distracting movements to steal wallets or mobile phones;

• report any suspicious objects or persons to officers on site or call the emergency number 113 and follow instructions where necessary.
