A new public petition has been launched in Luxembourg, calling for "Urgent Protection for Single-Parent Families and Vulnerable Residents in Luxembourg".
Submitted by petitioner Grace Walker, public petition no. 3844 aims to draw attention to the growing difficulties faced by many households in Luxembourg, particularly single-parent families, those in precarious employment and vulnerable individuals.
The petition calls on the authorities to take action to:
- better protect families at risk of eviction;
- guarantee access to medical care for all;
- strengthen support for employment and social inclusion;
- increase assistance for single-parent families.
The petition, (sub)titled "Living Hell in a Paradise: The Reality Faced by Too Many Families in Luxembourg", cites statistics such as:
- 43% of single-parent households in Luxembourg are at risk of poverty;
- 26% of households with children reported financial difficulties in 2023;
- an average of 15.5 tenant evictions per month were recorded between April 2023 and September 2024.
The petition also refers to a recent ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union, which confirmed that Luxembourg's minimum wage does not guarantee a decent standard of living.
"Behind the image of a wealthy and stable country, single-parent families, precarious workers and vulnerable residents struggle every day to keep a roof over their heads, access healthcare and live with dignity," said the petitioner.
She concluded: "The Grand Duchy is a land of courage, heart, and solidarity. Family is its core, dignity its foundation."
