On Wednesday 17 September 2025, in the presence of Luxembourg’s Minister of the Economy, SMEs, Energy and Tourism, Lex Delles, PreZero Lamesch laid the foundation stone for its future sorting centre in Bettembourg.

The idea for the project emerged in 2022, when the escalated conflict between Ukraine and Russia highlighted Europe’s global dependence on resources and the urgency of becoming a leader in the circular economy by 2030.

Against this backdrop, PreZero Lamesch set itself the ambition to build a unique installation in the country: a robotised sorting centre, equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) to transform each piece of waste into a real resource.

The sorting centre will be located on the Bettembourg site, covering an area equivalent to a football pitch, and will be equipped with the latest AI and automation technologies. As reported by PreZero Lamesch, four robotic arms will analyse and identify materials, while high-precision optical sorters will separate them within milliseconds. To guarantee safety, advanced prevention and firefighting systems (a major risk in the recycling sector) will also be integrated into the facility.

According to PreZero Lamesch, the company will be able to treat up to 70,000 tonnes of resources annually in its unit. “Each incoming material will be identified, analysed and directed to its corresponding fraction. Sorting becomes more precise, is refined, and the resources gain in purity to then be reinjected into the production cycle, fully contributing to the circular economy,” explained Yves Feuillen, CEO of PreZero Lamesch.

The development of the sorting centre has been supported by shareholder PreZero, with the municipality of Bettembourg also contributing to the project.
