
Luxembourg's Ministry of State, together with the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Cooperation and Foreign Trade, and the Defence Directorate, have confirmed that the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Mark Rutte, will pay a working visit to Luxembourg on Tuesday 2 September 2025.
Prime Minister Luc Frieden will welcome Mr Rutte at the Ministry of State. After the national anthems, Mr Rutte and Mr Frieden will hold a one-on-one meeting, followed by a working session with Minister of Defence Yuriko Backes. Discussions are expected to focus on key issues concerning the current international security environment, in particular support for Ukraine, the strengthening of NATO's capabilities and Luxembourg's contribution to the Alliance's collective deterrence and defence efforts.
The NATO Secretary General, the Prime Minister and the Defence Minister will then continue their discussions at Senningen Castle during a working lunch hosted by the Prime Minister in honour of the NATO Secretary General.
During the visit, Mr Rutte will be received in the audience by the Grand Duke at the Grand Ducal Palace and he will also meet with the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Claude Wiseler.
In addition, Mr Rutte with Minister Backes will visit the SES headquarters in Betzdorf, where they will meet SES CEO Adel Al Saleh and LuxGovSat CEO Patrick Biewer.
The Secretary General's programme in Luxembourg will conclude with a visit to the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) in Capellen, where he will be welcomed by Director General Stacy Cummings. The visit will include a tour of the facilities, a presentation of the agency's activities and a working meeting.
