The Grand Ducal Police have reported that they recently conducted several large-scale inspections of unoccupied houses in Luxembourg City as part of efforts to combat thefts by force.

On Thursday 24, Friday 25 and Monday 28 July 2025, officers carried out checks in vacant houses - so-called squats (illegally occupied buildings) - in various districts of the capital. As suspected perpetrators are believed to frequent such locations, one of the goals of these checks was to identify potentially suspicious individuals present on-site.

Officers inspected a total of 60 unoccupied houses and searched the individuals encountered. In ten cases, authorities drew up a "Fremdennotiz" (immigration-related report) and carried out identity checks in eleven cases.

Eight of the individuals encountered had already been flagged for repatriation; two of them were placed in the detention centre following a medical examination.

The police also confiscated 27 items identified as stolen property.

Approximately 30 officers from various units took part in the inspections, including those from several police stations, investigators from the Criminal Investigation Department (SPJ) and members of the canine unit.
