The Grand Ducal Police have warned of the increasing number of telephone scams using pre-recorded messages in English to make false claims that the police had issued an arrest warrant against them.
In a statement issued on Tuesday 17 June 2025, the police explained how criminals use this type of scam to try to steal personal information or bank details, or pressure victims into transferring money or handing over valuables.
The police emphasised legitimate authorities, companies or banks would never make such demands.
The police also warned that scammers often use a technique known as “call ID spoofing”, which allows them to display fake phone numbers. This technique makes it appear as though the call originated from a Luxembourg mobile number or an official agency, even though it did not.
The police have issued the following recommendations to counter these scams:
⁃ never share personal information or data with unknown callers;
⁃ be suspicious of any call that urges you to act quickly;
⁃ if one is unsure, contact the relevant authority or institution directly using official communication channels to verify the call.
The police have also asked the public to inform and educate older citizens in their area about this type of scam.
