The Grand Ducal Police has issued a warning for members of the public to be vigilant concerning ATM fraud attempts.

According to the police, they have recently been receiving reports of fraud attempts in which fraudsters manipulate card slot of ATMs so that customers' cards remain stuck in the slot. Customers are then prompted, either by a sticker placed next to the slot by the fraudsters or by a supposedly helpful person, to enter their card's PIN to release the card. This does not work. However, this allows the fraudsters to obtain the PIN (e.g. by also manipulating the keypad).

As soon as the customer leaves the ATM, the fraudsters remove the card and can then withdraw money from the victim's account.

The police have therefore issued a reminder for members of the public to always ensure that the keypad is not visible to anyone when entering the PIN code when using an ATM. If a card is blocked in the card reader and cannot be ejected, never enter the PIN code and never share the code with anyone else.

In this case, one should also block one's card immediately, either by calling the 24/7 Worldline helpline (tel: 491010) or using one's mobile banking app.

If one has become a victim of this type of fraud or notice anything unusual, one is urged to contact the police immediately.
