
On Wednesday 5 March 2025, the Directorate of Immigration of Luxembourg's Ministry of Home Affairs published figures regarding applications for international protection (asylum) and temporary protection in the Grand Duchy in January 2025.
International protection
A total of 188 people applied for international protection in Luxembourg in January 2025 (compared to 161 in January 2024 and 180 in January 2023). In 2024, Luxembourg received a total of 2,018 applications for international protection - down from 2,446 received in 2023.
138 decisions on asylum applications were taken in January 2025, with 41 applicants being granted refugee status.
In January 2025, most applicants were Algerian nationals (34), followed by Eritrean (20), Syrian (seventeen) and Moroccan (sixteen) nationals. Note that Luxembourg announced on 10 December 2024 the temporary suspension of processing asylum applications from Syrian nationals, following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime.
Temporary protection
102 people applied for temporary protection in Luxembourg in January 2025. A total of 99 decisions on temporary protection applications were taken in January, with 96 applicants being granted temporary protection status in Luxembourg.
Most applicants in January were Ukrainian nationals (91). Nine applicants were from Algeria and two came from unspecified countries.
