On Thursday 6 February 2025, Luxembourg's Water Management Administration reported that pollution had been detected and contained on both the Alzette and Sûre rivers.
On the afternoon of Wednesday 5 February, traces of hydrocarbons were visible on the Sûre river in Diekirch, the origin of which was traced by the Water Management Administration agents upstream to Ettelbruck. They discovered that a delivery truck on the site of the abattoir had a hydraulic leak. Hydrocarbons flowed into the rainwater pipe to join the Alzette river and then the Sûre river.
The CGDIS installed a plug at the end of the pipe, which was scheduled to be cleaned this morning.
The Water Management Administration has issued a reminder that any voluntary or involuntary pollution is liable to criminal prosecution.
