On 30 January 2025, the annual ceremony for the official award of the “EcoLabel Luxembourg”, “bed+bike” and “EU Ecolabel” labels was held at the Oekozenter Pafendall, in the presence of Luxembourg's Minister of the Economy, SMEs, Energy and Tourism, Lex Delles, and the Minister of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity, Serge Wilmes.

Five additional/new accommodations were awarded the “EcoLabel Luxembourg” while eleven had their labels renewed. Five were awarded the "bed+bike" label and one hotel received the "EU Ecolabel" for the very first time. In total, twenty-two accommodations were rewarded for their eco-responsible practices by obtaining or renewing one of these three ecological labels contributing to the promotion of sustainable tourism.

EcoLabel Luxembourg

Awarded since 1999 by the Ministry of the Economy, while the Oekozenter Pafendall supports establishments during the certification process and ensures the coordination work, the "EcoLabel Luxembourg" is aimed at Luxembourg tourist accommodation structures. To obtain the label, these establishments implement environmentally friendly practices, such as reducing energy and water consumption as well as packaging and plastic, using local and organic products, and using renewable energies. Granted for a renewable period of three years, it is currently held by 48 hotels, campsites, youth hostels, group accommodation and rural lodgings. The result of a collaboration between the Ministry of the Economy, the Oekozenter Pafendall and the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity, the "EcoLabel Luxembourg" is today the reference label at the national level.

Bed+Bike

Introduced in Luxembourg in 2011, and the result of the collaboration between the General Directorate of Tourism of the Ministry of the Economy and ProVelo.lu, the "bed+bike" label distinguishes establishments adapted to the needs of cycle tourists. It requires in particular a secure place for their bicycles and the provision of tools to carry out small repairs, as well as specific tourist information and a well-balanced breakfast. Granted for a renewable period of three years, it is currently held by 88 establishments.

EU Ecolabel

The "EU Ecolabel", created in 1992, is the official certification of the European Union for establishments adopting sustainable practices. In Luxembourg, this label is awarded by the Environment Administration, with the support of the Oekozenter Pafendall which supports interested tourist accommodation in their approach.

Promoting sustainable tourism is one of the government's priorities. In this context, Minister Delles presented his concept for sustainable tourism in December 2024, which is complementary to the national tourism strategy. The aim is to link Luxembourg's tourism offering to the concept of sustainability with its four dimensions, namely ecological, social, economic and heritage sustainability. The government will therefore continue to support these different labels in order to promote sustainable tourist accommodation in Luxembourg.

At the label award ceremony, Minister Delles said: "The 'EcoLabel Luxembourg' and 'bed+bike' labels perfectly embody our commitment to more sustainable and responsible tourism. They are in line with the concept of sustainable tourism presented in December 2024 and actively contribute to the implementation of our national tourism strategy. By promoting establishments that adopt eco-responsible practices and promote soft mobility, we are strengthening Luxembourg's attractiveness as an authentic and environmentally friendly destination. I warmly congratulate the winners who, through their commitment, are helping to shape the future of Luxembourg tourism."

Minister Wilmes stressed: "This year, the first Luxembourg hotel has obtained the 'EU Ecolabel' and thus becomes a pioneer at the national level. Through their commitment, establishments that meet the Ecolabel criteria are making an important contribution to protecting the climate and the environment. Furthermore, the Ecolabel increases the attractiveness of businesses, in favour of sustainable tourism."

Véronique Linden, coordinator of the "EcoLabel Luxembourg" at the Oekozenter Pafendall, indicated that "the Oekozenter Pafendall is delighted that the EcoLabel is an integral part of the national tourism strategy. We hope that this anchoring will strengthen the advantages of the label, namely, allowing tourist accommodation to improve its environmental impact thanks to personalised, free and local support, part of a continuous improvement process".

Jo Klein, project manager at ProVelo.lu, stressed that "it is with great pleasure that we are distinguishing five new establishments with the 'bed+bike' label in Luxembourg this year. Accommodation and campsites specially adapted to the needs of cyclists are a key element in guaranteeing pleasant bike rides. Thanks to our labelled accommodation, we hope to attract a growing number of cycle tourists to Luxembourg".
